Gunfire near the stadium

Developing story · Updated November 1, 2026, 1:37 AM Central

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — At least one person died and multiple people were injured in a shooting near Legion Field on Saturday night after the Magic City Classic, The Birmingham Times reported. Police said multiple people were wounded by gunfire and ordered tailgating suspended as officers investigated.

Birmingham police said the shooting happened near the 400 block of Graymont Avenue shortly after 7:50 p.m. Police had not confirmed the full number of victims or their conditions in the statement reported by WBRC. The Birmingham Times reported at least one death; the conditions of the other injured people were not known in its report.

An earlier report from WVTM 13, citing Birmingham Fire and Rescue, said four people were injured. Police had confirmed multiple people were shot in the information reported by WBRC; the available reports did not establish whether all four injuries cited by WVTM were gunshot wounds. Those early figures could change.

Police ask people to stay away

Officers and emergency personnel responded to the area around Graymont Avenue as the investigation got underway. Police described it as an active scene, meaning officials were still responding and investigating; that description alone does not establish that shooting was continuing.

Police suspended Magic City Classic tailgating and asked the public not to go near Legion Field, according to WBRC’s report. Anyone in the area should follow current directions from responding authorities.

WVTM reported that emergency crews were treating people near Third Street West. Police had not publicly provided a complete victim count or the conditions of those wounded in the statement cited by WBRC. The Birmingham Times reported one death separately.

A shooting after a Birmingham tradition

The shooting followed the Magic City Classic, the annual football matchup between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. This year marked the event’s 85th edition at Legion Field, according to the City of Birmingham.

The game is part of a wider day of events that includes a parade and tailgating. The reports available did not establish what led to the gunfire or whether those hurt had attended the game.

The initial social media post from AZ Intel described multiple people being shot near the stadium after the game. Local reporting citing police and fire officials provides the basis for the details above.
