Matthew “Matt” Wright, the veteran nine-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning executive producer who spent 16 years shaping The Ellen DeGeneres Show, died from cardiopulmonary arrest brought on by hypertension, according to official records released by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
Wright died suddenly in his sleep on October 30, 2026, at the age of 52 while working remotely in Los Angeles. The official death certificate, finalized on Friday and obtained by entertainment news outlets, classified his death as natural causes.
Forensic examiners identified cardiopulmonary arrest as the primary cause of death, with essential hypertension listed as the underlying physiological cause. The report also cited obstructive sleep apnea and Class II obesity as significant contributing factors that placed fatal stress on his cardiovascular system.
Sixteen years at 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show'
Wright was widely regarded across the daytime television industry as one of its most gifted comedic producers and creative architects. He joined The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2006 during its fourth season, steadily rising through the production ranks from segment producer to supervising producer and eventually executive producer.
During his 16-year tenure on Stage 1 at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Wright spearheaded many of the program’s signature comedic segments, audience giveaways, celebrity pranks, and viral human-interest features. His work helped the show capture nine Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show and earned him 25 total Emmy nominations.
Following the conclusion of Ellen in 2022, Wright continued producing high-profile daytime television and unscripted formats, contributing to The Jennifer Hudson Show, The Drew Barrymore Show, and NBC’s prime-time game show Ellen’s Game of Games.

“Matt was an amazing guy,” DeGeneres said in the video. “He was kind, he was funny, and he made me laugh every single day. He was the glue to our entire family at the Ellen Show for 16 years. My heart goes out to his husband, Justin, his mother, and everyone who loved him as much as we did.”
Former co-executive producer Andy Lassner shared that he had spent time chatting with Wright on the set of The Jennifer Hudson Show just hours before his passing, praising Wright’s generosity, gentle humor, and peerless comedic instincts.
