Georgia Senate race called

Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff has won reelection in Georgia, defeating Republican Rep. Mike Collins, according to a race call by the Associated Press. Axios also reported that Ossoff won a second term.

The result is a Democratic hold in a state President Donald Trump carried in 2024. Ossoff was the only Senate Democrat seeking reelection this year in a state Trump won that year, AP reported.

A news organization’s race call is not the state’s official certification. Ballots remain to be counted and reviewed; this article does not give final vote totals.

What the hold means

Georgia had been a Republican target as the parties fought for Senate control. Because Ossoff already represents the state, his projected victory keeps a seat with the Democrats rather than adding a seat previously held by Republicans.

The Georgia result alone does not determine which party will control the next Senate. Other races remain to be counted or called. AP’s election-night guide notes that control of Congress can take days to establish when key contests are close.

The candidates and the campaign

Ossoff first won his Senate seat in the January 2021 runoff, alongside Democrat Raphael Warnock’s victory in a separate Georgia contest. This year, Ossoff campaigned as a sharp critic of Trump and emphasized issues including the cost of living and a proposal to restrict congressional stock trading, according to AP.

Collins, a U.S. House member and trucking company owner, won a Republican primary runoff in June. He ran with Trump’s endorsement and emphasized immigration enforcement, Reuters reported. The candidates also argued over tariffs and health care in a Georgia Public Broadcasting account of their debate.
