Virginia’s Senate race called

November 3, 2026 · 7:39 p.m. Eastern

Democratic Sen. Mark Warner has won reelection in Virginia, defeating Republican Bert Mizusawa, according to a race call by the Associated Press.

AP called the race at 7 p.m. Eastern as Virginia’s polls closed. It was the news organization’s first Senate call of the 2026 midterm election night, according to its live coverage. The call is a news organization’s determination of the winner; Virginia election officials will conduct the official canvass and certification separately.

Warner, a former Virginia governor, won a fourth Senate term. Mizusawa is a retired Army major general and Afghanistan war veteran, AP reported. No final vote totals are included here while returns are being counted.

A Democratic hold

Because Warner already holds the seat, the AP call is a Democratic hold, not a seat gained from Republicans. The Virginia contest had been viewed as favorable to the incumbent before Election Day; the Washington Post reported that Warner had raised substantially more money than Mizusawa and that analysts expected him to win.

The result in Virginia alone does not determine which party will control the next Senate. Other contests remain to be counted or called, and early returns in any race are incomplete. AP’s guide to congressional control explains why the national outcome can take longer than election night.
