Gunfire on the eve of Halloween

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — One person was killed and six others were wounded Friday night in a shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center, Fairfield police said. The violence came one night before Halloween, at a shopping center that serves communities between San Francisco and Sacramento.

Officers responded at about 8:30 p.m. on October 30. Police said all seven victims suffered gunshot wounds. The six survivors were taken to hospitals; at least three were reported in critical condition in the initial account, according to ABC News.

The Associated Press later reported that police described the shooting as a targeted incident involving one suspect. The report did not explain what investigators meant by targeted or provide a motive. Police had not released the victims’ identities.

Where it happened

Solano Town Center is in Fairfield, in Solano County, near Interstate 80. The shopping center lists its address as 1350 Travis Boulevard. The star marks the approximate shopping-center location, not a precise position inside the store.

A witness account — and its limits

David Bernal told KCRA that his wife was inside the store when the shooting began. She had been near the wig section and got out through an emergency exit, according to the interview, which was reported by CNN Newsource.

Bernal said his wife described people “running, yelling and crying.” He was relaying her account; the interview does not establish the full sequence of events inside the store or the condition of other shoppers.

Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said late Friday that detectives were speaking with witnesses and working to identify whoever was responsible, Bay City News reported. The Los Angeles Times reported shortly after midnight that no suspect had been arrested at the time of its account. That earlier report does not establish the suspect’s current custody status.

Timeline

Times are Pacific and approximate where indicated.

  1. Fairfield police responded to a shooting at the Spirit Halloween store, according to police information reported by ABC News.
  2. KCRA’s initial report said police were investigating an incident at the shopping center; details in that early account were limited.
  3. Chief Marshall briefed reporters as detectives investigated; Bay City News reported one death, six wounded and three people in critical condition.
  4. The Associated Press reported a subsequent police statement describing the incident as targeted and involving one suspect. The AP report did not specify a time for that statement.

What remains unanswered

The identities of the victims and the circumstances leading to the shooting were not detailed in the reports reviewed. The available reports do not establish who was targeted, why the shooting happened or whether a suspect has since been taken into custody.

Those distinctions matter. An active investigation means detectives are still working the case; it does not, on its own, establish that gunfire is continuing. Likewise, the initial description of critical injuries is not a later hospital update.

AP reported that Solano Town Center canceled its planned Halloween trick-or-treating event after the shooting. Anyone with information can contact Fairfield police at 707-428-7600 or 1030mall@fairfield.ca.gov, according to ABC7.
