Vance’s assessment

November 4, 2026 · 10:45 p.m. Central

Vice President JD Vance blamed the war with Iran for Republicans’ midterm losses Wednesday, offering a blunt assessment after voters handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress.

In a post on X, Vance said his party lost support from people who had voted for the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024. He attributed the shift to the war and cited a pollster’s account of voters’ concerns, including the cost of living and U.S. relations with Israel.

President Donald Trump acknowledged that the conflict had hurt Republicans politically but defended the decision to go to war. Asked about Vance’s post, Trump said he knew the vice president’s views and thought the post was fine, the Associated Press reported.

What Vance said

Vance argued that the main problem was not a failure of Republican voters to turn out, but that some voters who backed the ticket in 2024 chose Democrats this time. He described a pollster’s findings without publishing the underlying survey in his post.

His argument is a political assessment, not proof that any single issue caused the result. The vice president has previously publicly defended the president’s approach to Iran, ABC News reported.

Trump defends the war

Trump said he knew the war would affect the election and maintained that military action was necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He told reporters he would make the same decision again, according to ABC.

Democratic National Committee spokesperson Rosemary Boeglin questioned why Vance had not spoken out more forcefully and said he shared responsibility for the administration’s record, AP reported.

Newstro previously covered Trump’s initial reaction to the midterm results; Vance’s post adds the vice president’s separate explanation.

What voter surveys show

Voters reported several concerns. About one-third of voters surveyed in the AP Voter Poll said the Iran war was crucial to their congressional vote, compared with roughly half who said the same of the cost of living or government corruption, AP reported.

Those figures measure what respondents said mattered to their vote; they do not isolate a single cause of the outcome. ABC’s voter survey similarly found a larger share of House voters named cost of living and corruption as crucial than named the war.
