A change at the Texas factory

Updated November 7, 2026 · 1:18 p.m. Central

Elon Musk says Tesla will add a production shift as it tries to fill Cybertruck orders before the company dismantles the pickup’s Texas assembly line to make room for Cybercab production.

In a November 7 post on X, Tesla’s chief executive said the backlog was larger than the number of trucks Tesla could make before the planned changeover, which he placed around June or July 2027. He did not give an order total, say when the shift would start, or guarantee every order would be filled. The backlog and schedule have not been independently verified. Drive Tesla also reported Musk’s statement.

In a separate reply to Robert Scoble, who described speaking with Cybertruck fans and enjoying a drive in one, Musk said Tesla would build the pickup for another eight or nine months before focusing on scaling Cybercab. That is a projection, not a firm final date.

Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas factory around the middle of 2027 to make room for more Cybercabs, CEO Elon Musk said Friday.

Musk announced the change in a post on X. He did not say whether Tesla would move production of the electric pickup elsewhere or stop making it altogether. The Texas plant is currently the only place it is built, The Associated Press reported.

The Cybercab is Tesla’s driverless vehicle. Shifting factory space toward it marks a change in priorities, but Musk has not given a detailed production schedule.

From launch to wind-down

Tesla unveiled the angular, stainless-steel pickup in 2019, and customers began receiving vehicles in late 2023. Its unusual design drew attention, but the truck also encountered recalls and weaker sales than its early ambitions suggested, according to AP and Reuters.

Tesla does not report Cybertruck sales separately. Kelley Blue Book estimated that sales fell 48% from 2024 to 2025 and were down 28% from January through September 2026, AP reported. Those figures are estimates, not Tesla’s own model-specific sales totals.

Reuters reported that Tesla did not immediately respond to its request for comment outside normal business hours. The company had not provided details in Musk’s post about the timing of any final vehicle or production beyond Texas.

What owners and buyers still need to know

The announcement leaves open whether Tesla will manufacture the truck at another location and when Texas production would end. Musk has said he expects the line to be dismantled around June or July 2027, not on a specific date.

Buyers considering a vehicle can check current ordering and service information directly with Tesla. The announcement itself did not set out a warranty or service policy, and it should not be read as saying existing vehicles will stop working.
