What happened
Michigan, Georgia and Maine’s October 8 Senate debates turned personal, while also exposing differences over tariffs, health care and President Trump’s agenda. Newstro puts three brief original debate excerpts in context and explains how the races fit into the fight for Senate control.
Michigan: Mike Rogers (R) vs. Abdul El-Sayed (D).
Georgia: Sen. Jon Ossoff (D) vs. Rep. Mike Collins (R).
Maine: Sen. Susan Collins (R) vs. Troy Jackson (D).
Campaign accusations are attributed. Columbia confirms El-Sayed earned an MD in 2014. Jackson provided no evidence for his war-profiteering allegation; Susan Collins denied it. Broad campaign claims about responsibility for rising prices are not presented as independently established facts.
Debates: October 8, 2026. Report: October 9, 2026. General election: November 3, 2026.
Current Senate division: 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who caucus with Democrats. A net gain of four would give that Democratic group 51 seats. The full national map determines the majority.
