November 8, 2026, at 7:30 a.m. Central time (10:30 a.m. Buenos Aires).

Pope Leo XIV touched down in Buenos Aires on Sunday afternoon, opening a historic four-day apostolic journey to Argentina that ends a nearly four-decade absence of a reigning pontiff in the South American nation, the Buenos Aires Times reported.

The visit is the first by any Pope since John Paul II traveled to Argentina in 1987. Remarkably, Leo's immediate predecessor, Pope Francis—born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires—never returned to his native land during his 13-year papacy between 2013 and 2026, giving Sunday’s arrival deep historical and emotional resonance for millions of Argentine faithful.

Arriving at Jorge Newbery Airport on the second leg of a 12-day South American tour that began in Uruguay, the Pope traveled directly to the presidential palace, the Casa Rosada, for a high-stakes bilateral meeting with libertarian President Javier Milei, according to Vatican News.

A stark ideological faceoff at Casa Rosada

While the Milei administration officially presented the trip as a pastoral pilgrimage, the encounter brings together two sharply divergent worldviews at a moment of acute domestic strain, NBC News reported.

Milei, a self-described anarcho-capitalist who previously unleashed fierce rhetorical attacks on Catholic social doctrine before seeking diplomatic detente, greeted the pontiff with formal military honors. However, local Catholic bishops and grassroots parish priests across Buenos Aires have forcefully denounced Milei's fiscal "chainsaw" austerity, which slashed funding for soup kitchens, elderly pensions, disability allowances, and public health clinics.

Vatican diplomats also face foreign policy disagreements with Buenos Aires, particularly concerning the escalating war in Iran, where Pope Leo has repeatedly urged multilateral de-escalation and humanitarian ceasefires, contrasting with Milei’s staunch alignment with hardline Western military interventions, according to MercoPress.

Visits to disabled care home, Córdoba, and Luján

The pontiff’s itinerary is loaded with symbolic gestures toward marginalized communities affected by austerity measures.

Following addresses to civil society leaders at Palacio Libertad, Pope Leo will visit the Cottolengo Don Orione in Claypole, a church-operated facility caring for hundreds of physically and intellectually disabled residents that has struggled following recent government subsidy cuts.

The Pope will subsequently celebrate open-air masses in the central city of Córdoba and lead a massive national prayer pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján, the spiritual patroness of Argentina, before departing for Peru from Ezeiza International Airport on Wednesday, November 11.
