South Korea reports launches

November 4, 2026 · 9:34 a.m. Central

North Korea fired several missiles toward the sea off its east coast Wednesday, South Korea’s military said, as officials in Seoul and Washington assessed the launches.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the missiles from the Sondok area of South Hamgyong Province, according to Yonhap reporting published by The Korea Times and Reuters. The body of water is known as the East Sea in South Korea and the Sea of Japan in Japan.

The exact number and missile type were not specified in the reports. South Korean and U.S. officials were analyzing their characteristics; identifying them as a particular model or describing a specific target would be premature.

What is known

The South Korean military said it was monitoring activity and maintaining readiness alongside the United States, Yonhap reported. The Associated Press also reported multiple launches, citing South Korea’s Joint Chiefs.

Some analysts offered preliminary assessments of possible missile types. Those assessments are not the same as an official identification, and details may change as officials review the available data.

Recent tests and diplomacy

The launch followed several recent North Korean weapons tests. On October 29, South Korea reported a separate series of launches toward eastern waters, AP reported.

Wednesday’s launches came after North Korea rejected U.S. accusations linking it to the recent Binance cryptocurrency theft, according to AP. The proximity of those events does not establish the reason for the launches.

North Korea denied involvement in the theft, while U.S. investigators have publicly attributed the attack to North Korean actors. That dispute and the missile assessment remain separate matters.
