Workers join the student movement

November 5, 2026 · 4:38 a.m. Central / 11:38 a.m. in France

French unions began a nationwide day of strikes and demonstrations Thursday, joining a student-led protest movement and pressing for higher wages as households face rising costs.

Hundreds of high schools were closed or unable to operate, some because of protests and others because teachers were striking, while public transport was heavily disrupted, The Associated Press reported. Unions said roughly 260 rallies were planned nationwide; that is a planned-event count, not a count of demonstrators.

Large marches were planned in Paris, Lyon and Marseille. The day was still unfolding, and a reliable nationwide turnout was not yet available.

From classrooms to the streets

The movement began in September with concerns about staff shortages at a high school southeast of Paris. It spread as students called for more education funding and workers sought relief from rising fuel and other costs and improvements to pensions, AP reported.

Unions also object to the government’s proposed 2027 budget and have demanded wage and pension increases. Reuters reported that organizers included major labor groups and student organizations; government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said authorities were vigilant after unrest and looting on October 17.

Disruptions and security

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said about 70,000 police and gendarmes were being deployed nationwide, according to the Interior Ministry. Officers’ tactics during earlier protests have drawn criticism over injuries to demonstrators. Earlier demonstrations included peaceful marches as well as violence in some places; the history of those events does not establish what will happen at Thursday’s rallies.

Reuters reported that authorities and unions had discussed the crisis before the strike. Rail and public transport disruption had been expected, but the extent can vary by route and time. Travelers should check their operator’s current notices.
