What’s happening

Nationwide student protests in France have led to thousands of arrests and hundreds of injuries, with schools set on fire, the Express reports. By early afternoon Friday, the French education ministry reported protests affecting 560 schools.

Friday brought more of the scenes that have dominated streets this week: vandalism, garbage fires, and teenagers confronting and taunting police. Officers charged, fired tear gas and made more arrests. Students barricading high school gates have worn masks and goggles against police tear gas.

The protests first erupted last week in the Paris region and spread nationwide, even to smaller towns. The new school term started only about a month ago. Some university students also joined the protests this week.

The protests come during France’s presidential election race. Candidates campaigning to succeed President Emmanuel Macron in May have seized on the demonstrations as a political issue. Macron, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a third consecutive term, has spoken out against protest violence and political manipulation of the young demonstrators.
