An urgent plea from the homestead

Former child star Brandon "Bug" Hall, beloved by a generation of filmgoers for his breakout portrayal of the cowlicked, serenade-singing Alfalfa in 1994’s The Little Rascals, has turned to online crowdfunding for emergency financial assistance as his family struggles to complete their off-grid rural homestead ahead of their sixth child’s birth.
Hall, 41, launched a campaign on GoFundMe titled "Helping the Hall-Barnetts Finish Before Baby Six," explaining that his wife, Jill Marie DeGroff, is less than a month away from delivery while the family continues to live inside a camper on an undeveloped 80-acre rural parcel in Arkansas.
“I avoided asking for charity for six years,” Hall wrote in the campaign appeal. “We took a vow of poverty and left the entertainment industry behind to live simply and raise our children in accordance with our faith. But with winter setting in, baby number six arriving in weeks, and several unexpected setbacks, I really need some help.”
Roughing it on 80 rural acres
According to Hall, the family recently relocated to their raw land to establish an agrarian homestead and live disconnected from modern corporate utilities. However, the transition proved far harsher and more expensive than budgeted.
The family encountered unexpected permitting hurdles and thousands of dollars in mandatory fees to secure a basic electrical hookup. With temperatures dropping across the Ozarks, their camper ran low on heating propane, while overdue phone bills threatened to cut off their only emergency lifeline to local obstetric care.
Hall originally set a modest target of $2,000 to cover emergency propane tanks, wire insulation, and basic framing lumber to make a temporary shelter weather-tight before labor begins. Once the plea gained traction across social media and nostalgia blogs, donations surged past $15,000 within 48 hours.
From Hollywood childhood to radical faith
Hall’s path from the silver screen to an off-grid Arkansas camper represents one of Hollywood’s most unusual post-childhood transformations.
Following his iconic 1994 turn in Universal's The Little Rascals alongside Brittany Ashton Holmes and Travis Tedford, Hall worked steadily through his twenties, appearing in Disney films like The Big Green and guest-starring in prime-time dramas such as CSI, Criminal Minds, and Masters of Sex.
In 2013, Hall underwent a profound religious reversion, converting to traditionalist Catholicism. In 2020, he announced he was leaving Hollywood permanently, professing a personal vow of poverty and relocating his family to rural land to pursue self-reliance and homeschool his children, styling his family online as the "Hall-Barnetts of the Holy Cross."
