Back-to-back intercepts on Interstate 5

November 7, 2026 · 5:35 a.m. Central

U.S. Border Patrol agents stationed at the San Clemente tactical checkpoint in Southern California intercepted more than 1,435 pounds of suspected cocaine valued at approximately $9.8 million during two vehicle inspections that occurred just three minutes apart.

The coordinated discovery yielded 550 vacuum-sealed bundles of illicit narcotics concealed inside heavy-duty black plastic trash bags, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

The checkpoint, situated along the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the northern edge of San Diego County, serves as a major secondary barrier designed to disrupt narcotics trafficking corridors moving north from the U.S.–Mexico border into greater Los Angeles.

Suspicious maneuvers and K-9 alerts

The interdictions began when agents observed a northbound vehicle approach the primary inspection canopy, where the driver abruptly attempted to reverse out of the travel lane. Agents immediately redirected the vehicle into secondary inspection.

Three minutes later, agents referred a second passenger vehicle to secondary after detecting behavioral anomalies during the primary interview. Border Patrol canine detection teams were deployed to conduct exterior free-air sniffs of both vehicles, and the trained dogs alerted positively to the presence of narcotics on both automobiles.

A physical search of both trunks and passenger compartments uncovered dozens of garbage bags stuffed with bricks of cocaine wrapped in cellophane and vacuum-sealed plastic.

Custody and federal prosecution

Both drivers were arrested at the scene without incident. Federal authorities withheld their identities pending formal arraignments in U.S. District Court.

Border Patrol agents transferred the two suspects, along with the 1,435 pounds of cocaine and both impounded vehicles, to the custody of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for ongoing federal narcotics prosecution.

Timeline of the seizure

  • Primary Lane 1: First vehicle attempts evasive reverse maneuver at the checkpoint; diverted to secondary inspection.
  • Three minutes later: Second vehicle flagged during primary questioning and referred to secondary.
  • K-9 Inspection: Detection dogs alert to both vehicles, leading to the discovery of 550 packages inside black trash bags totaling 1,435 pounds.
  • Federal Handover: Both drivers arrested and transferred with the narcotics to the DEA.
